Why does a trolleybus (a/k/a trolleycoach) use two trolley poles instead of one, as on vintage streetcars?

  1. The trolleybus requires more power.

  2. Rubber-tired trolleybus is not grounded; the second pole is for grounding.

  3. Newer design keeps better contact with catenary wires.

  4. Harmonically-tuned poles are for noise reduction purposes.

Well, electricity needs a complete circuit so it needs two conductors and has no rail. I don’t know if I would call it “grounding” or not.
