I think that it’s a crime that an engine this expensive uses that badly out dated system of picking up electricity from only one side of the engine and one side of the tender plus not having an operating coupling on the pilot. I wouldn’t touch this engine with a ten foot pole.

I didn’t realize thee was amother release with NEM standard wheels (larger flanges and narrower gauging between the wheels)-guess which I bought?! It was on discount though- maybe that balances it out It still looks great and I love the slow speed performance- superb! (2007)

I have two of these beauties. I think the exhaust is one of the best I’ve ever heard, especially when they doublehead. I can live with the non-playable whistle, it’s generic enough to sound appropriate for anything. I have never seen any engine that started as smoothly. I’ve never had one stall because of its pickup arrangement, but I have one, not both, short out on Peco switches. Does anyone have a cure for this? What is causing the problem?

I own two of these, and would recommend them to anyone. Current prices are around 250, and the running is superb. My only beef is the as-delivered configuration, which nobody models. In the crowded HO mike world, this one comes out on top.

I have two of these, One has the problems listed with fixed whistle sounds etc, but I just took delivery 2 days ago of a UP Trix Mikado via EBAY and they have clearly updated the sound decoder.

This one will play the whistle as long as you hold the button, short long, etc… Plus you can pay the whistle and the bell simultaenously… I was happy with my first (older version) Trix, but this newer version is superb…

Bonjour a tous
J ai une Mikado U.P. .Je ne comprend pas comment un si petit moteur est aussi perforfent. une très bonne mécanique. J ai aussi deux Big Boy de Trix , elles ont une mécanique parfaite.

I purchased two of these units and they run superbly as stated in the MR review. Slow speed performance is as good as any diesel I have. The smoothness of the mechanisms is truly exceptional. I equipped my units with the QSI Revolution sound decoder and a single 1.1" speaker in the tender. The conversion was a simple plug n’ play procedure. Now they sound as good as they look. The other alteration was removing the existing pilot couplers, some quick work with a dremel tool and file, installation of Kadee no. 58s’ with draft boxes, and the locomotives are ready for general service. If you are looking for a USRA design Mikado, look no further, if you can find them.
