Has anyone run into the drive shaft u joint slipping on the shaft? Is this a commom problem? To me this is a dumb design if they were relying on friction fit.I’m more than likly answering my own question but do you just put a bead of acc/epoxy on the u joint or get a replacement from Bowser Anyone?
Had the same problem with mine.
I emailed Bowser & eventually they sent a replacement.

Yep, a friend of mine had this very problem on his Stewart Centurys. If they haven’t broken or split, a little drop of CA or epoxy with fix 'em right up. Otherwise, you have to talk to Bowser about getting replacements.

There was a faulty first batch when Stewart did thier first release. At the time they were shipping out the parts. If my foggy brain recollects the frist run of Conrail and PRR one’s were most effected. I know when I had troubles with my PRR one Stewart had the parts out to me in less than a week. That was before the Bowser takeover though.

I bought mine(ACL) second hand about 5 or 6 years back.So I’m pretty sure mine was the first run.
Hi the best thing to do is to call Bowser and get the parts you need. They really are a good engine, great pullers and the detail is wonderful. I kick myself that I didn’t keep mine but I went to a smaller layout and went all CN and CP power. I did keep two of my C630’s though and painted them in CP action red, they are also keepers and I’ve had no troubles with them.
Rob
Heck I bought it for 35 bucks. So I guess I have nothing to really complain about.I always thought it ran a little slow but now I know why.Once again its a easy fix.One day when I get around to it…
it will be this!
Thanks
Wow you got a good price ! They did that as a factory paint scheme and the mostly all white snowbird scheme as well.I remeber the year they first came out. I had gone to the Springfield trainshow with a couple of friends and Stewart had a booth there,he had test shots of the C630 low and high hoods which have since been produced he also had C636’s which so far I haven’t seen produced. In talking with him he has concidering doing the MLW “M” series ones as well with the proper equal spaced Dofasco trucks. That was all before the Bowser takeover so I won’t hold my breath, but it would be nice if they did make them.
Rob
Yeah 35 bucks…The guy who was selling it was getting out of the hobby.I remember stewart had shown a preproduction model in MR back in 1995.I think the didn’t come out with the first 628 in late 99 or 2000.I wish they will come out with the c-636(Reading)or c-430(Reading/NYSW) but I know the hi ad truck would be tricky to produce.
As I said he had pre- production stuff at teh show we were at in I think 1996. He was gouing to do the whole enchalada, even the one off BC Rail M630W’s with the safety cabs, he had mock-up hi-ad and dofasco three axle trucks. At the time he was still shopping around for pplaces to make the parts which at the time were going to be cost prohibitive. I see though that the big Alco line has been shelved in favour of baldwin switchers. give them time though you may see some of the others come out eventually.
Rob
Ya gota love the big century’s.[:)]
I can only hope Atlas makes more Alco models.
Yup I buy Alco’s weather I need them or not a hooby in a hobby if you will. I model CN and CP so many of the other Alco’s weren’t rostered. So I justify it by picking the Alcos not bought by the Canadian roads by buying one’s on connecting roads. That way it’s a hobby in a hobby of sorts. So far I’ve picked up a n RSC2 in Millwaukee road , a D&H RS11 and a D&H C628 and one of the new Atlas RS36’s, I picked up a New York Central RS32 from .and I’ve picked up a Proto RS27 in the demonstrater scheme. The wife thinks I’m nuts but oh well you can never have enough Alco’s large or small really.
Rob
I’ve thought about getting some RS-27’s in PC. U G L Y as stink but I’m still waiting for the price to go down.Too cheap to pay retail [:D] Anything with lightning stripes is aways cool NYC or D&H[tup]
BTW I tried the ACC on the driveshaft. It worked for a little while. but it spun the joint free.I know that acc has not shear strength. So off to Bowser I go.It kills me that the part cost’s 1.20 and shipping is 8.95.I’ll have to sweet talk the CSR @ Bowser.
Good luck with the sweet talking,I’m still waiting for two sets of trolley poles I ordered a year ago [sigh]mind you the trolley stuff they make is a minor bit of their in house production as compared to the rest of the lines they handle.I’ve never been a huge fan of ACC for anything but building kits, anything that moves and well you found out.The RS27’s do have a face only momma can love don’t they[:D] Like you I’m too cheap to pay full price too,I do have a couple LHS’s that tend to discount though , so as long as I don’t want sound I get a good price.
Rob
Just gotta love those Alco’s. The SP&S was Alco Country around here. BN imported the former NP Alco’s here after the merger.
As for the Stewart Centuries I had heard that they had drive problems so I didn’t buy any. I might have to get a C-628 & C-630 to add to the Espee power. The Alco C-636 would be a great addition. BN had ten of them all from the SP&S which used them on the Oregon Trunk out of Wishram to Bend. www.Trainpix.com has some good photos of BN’s Alcos
Diesel Era mag. a couple of years back did a feature article on them.Pretty neat.If I remember correctly they had air starters to turn over the engine.
Just about all of the Century series had air starters,if you can try to grab a copy of Pentrex’s Those Amazing Alco’s , part three covers the century line right up to the final MLW and Bombardier production, they have a few seens of air starters in action, actually all three parts of Those amazing Alco’s are good[:D]

Dan, While you wait for new parts you could try a drop of Loctite green stud and bearing mount. Just make sure you don’t get any in the motor bearings. I think the Loctite p/n is 680 and although pricey it is available in a small tube. Hope that helps J.R.

I have a small tube of loctite red…will that work?
I never though of using the loktite might be a good idea to tide you over. ihaven’t much experiance with it but all three colours are for different things. GMT’s a car guy and I trust his experiance on this one, if he’s saying green go fer the green.[:D] BTW I see that on ebay theer’s a guy selling two Leihigh Valley C628’s one in the sbowbird and one in the Cornell red scheme , take a look the price was still under a hundred bucks for both of them yesterday.
