Trouble with new MTH Coors Silver Bullet Train

I just got a new MTH Coors set and I am having trouble with all the reefer cars working properly. I have the 3 reefers from the set and one add on reefer. I tried 4 different Lionel cw-80 transformers and none would run the train properly. I called MTH and they said they had the same problem with the Lionel transformers and recommended a Z1000 transformer and controller. I ordered one and it arrived yesterday. I set everything up and everything seems to work except for one reefer that came with the set I can not get the pallets of Coors to slide out so that I can put the smoke fluid in. I did remove the shipping screw so I know that’s not the problem. Also the add on reefer opened and worked the first time I cycled the doors but now it doesn’t open at all. I have not taken the shells off the cars yet to investigate. Any ideas? I’d hate to have to go through the warranty channels if it something simple that I can take care of myself. I install and maintain barrier gates (not the railroad type, unfortunately) for a living so I think I’m up to the task of any adjustment etc. if needed. This is my first experience with MTH products and it’s been bumpy so far, but I’m still thinking positive.

Hi Gateman67,

The problem that you are having with the CW-80 is a result of the CW-80 using a chopped sine output, which many MTH products, most notably anything with Proto-Sound 2 electronics don’t play well with chopped sine currents. The nice thing about the CW-80, is it’s near zero voltage performance. If you have a locomotive that wont start slowly or smoothly with the MTH transformers, try it with the CW-80. Most MTH transformers have a minimum voltage of about 5-6 volts. The CW-80’s programmable accessory output is also another nice feature of the CW-80. The CW-80 is only an 80 watt transformer, but used within it’s capabilities, they are a GREAT little transformer.
