I got this brass one many years ago. It will pull maybe 3 free-rolling 40-foot cars on straight and level track. Only the rear truck is powered. More for show than go, I’m afraid. One of these days I may pull it apart and see if there’s somewhere I can put some weight, but for now it’s mostly a shelf queen… I don’t have your genius for engineering drive systems. [:)]
Another really neat project! I look forward to following your progress.
The critter bug just bit me again too. I am working on an improved version of the critter in my avatar. It won’t be much different but it will have the headlight where it belongs on the front instead of the roof, and it will have a proper backup light instead of just the red warning light. It will run on my DC HOn30 mine track so I don’t have to find space for a decoder, but the directional constant lighting will be fun to figure out.
I have also acquired four spud drives (two Tenshodo and two NWSL) which will be fodder for future projects.[Y][:D]
I haven’t gotten much done on mine yet. I’m working on building the trucks and drive system, but I haven’t built any of the actual kit yet. Too many projects, and I do enough detailed work everyday for my job that I just don’t feel like working on the projects too often when I get home. They’re all coming together little by little, though.
You should give it a try in N-scale. It brings a whole new set of challenges. I have a class-b shay that I’ve been working on for years now, mostly sitting on the shelf. I’m trying to get the driveline in order too, and perhaps I will make more progress when my fingers are up to working with the tiny parts. 000-120 screws are common on it, and I have to make many of them on the lathe. The sad thing is I have nowhere to run it. I have ho-scale
Hello all. I built a class A last year using a stanton drive from the NWSL folks. I used trucks from an old MDC climax kit as a cover. It’s on youtube if you search “climax class A ho scale”. Sorry for poor image quality (i need to work on that). The stanton runs a bit fast but it’s an easy install. I managed to put DCC and sound too… Simon
Thanks for reviving this thread - it was timely for me. I almost pulled the trigger for an NWSL brass HOn3 Class A Climax, but it was just too much facing 2 kids in college this year and the buy of an FED 4-4-0 pending. I was down for having to say no. But I had totally forgotten about this thread.
For the past 6 months, I have been working on my home test track layout and an HOn3 module, so my loco building has gone nowhere (which is why I had forgotten about this thread). Having scored a bunch of HOn3 MDC Shay and associated NWSL parts at a recent show, I need to get this idea going again.
Preparing to become empty-nesters has been interesting. Household chores are more time-consuming because if I don’t do it, the wife gets stuck with it, and vice-versa. We are seriously looking at moving to a home with less acreage if we can sell out without losing. We did just buy a little A-frame camper to spend weekends exploring Colorado, so I don’t know how my hobby time will be impacted next fall.
Hello At least I am not the only one who has things on the back shelf. I have been out of the train room for awhile. Now that I getting back in there I am finding all the things that I started and now need to get them done. Thanks for the update and have a nice day Frank
