Trying to determine paint schemes late 60's early 70's

Modeling the Cleveland area during the PC and trying to nail down a couple details:

What was the first year for the Chessie rainbow paint scheme? I think 1973 but I can’t confirm that.

What paint scheme were NYC E’s running circa 1968? Were they still lightening stripes or a variation of the freight cigar band?

What was the first year Amtrak got it’s own paint scheme?

By late 1971 I’m pretty sure Amtrak had some of it’s own colors on the rails. Most equipment was painted by 1975. Early years were called the rainbow era.

What paint scheme were NYC E’s running circa 1968?

Most NYC passenger units wore this scheme by the mid 60s…

Here’s a site that will help you in your research.

Thanks Brakie, that answers that question, now I know what to look for. I knew the frights went to that scheme, just never found evidence of passenger units going that way, everyone liked to take pics of lightning stripes.

As for early Amtrak, oh yeah I know they were originally running a smorgasbord of fallen flag paintschemes, just not sure when they got to paint any of their own.

Seems Classic trains is going to do their next issue focusing on Amtrak so I may find all the info I need there.

Check with the C&O Historical Society.

From what I read in the C&O Historical Society book “Chessie the Railroad Kitten”, the Chessie System scheme came about in 1972.

Andrew

The Penn Central merger occured in 1967.

Andew

OK so 72 is the first year for the rainbow, works ok for me.

And yes the PC merger was planned during the 60’s, took effect in 68, bankrupt by 71 and hung on in recievership until Conrail. Surpsing amount of stuff never got painted into PC scheme even by the time Conrail came to be, no money for it.

For the Chessie you could always go with this one
