Trying to get into a railroad job ... Can I talk to some people in the Industry?????

Hello all,

I am Currently a Automotive Technician . I want to switch gears into rail. Just would like some info about Job descriptions and duties from people who already know , and what is the best way to get hired into a major organization. Any help and info would be greatly appreciated . [:D]

I got into it by applying online. Try the closest large railroad to where you live…for me it was UP, just try to apply online. Thats what worked for me.

I’m curious: is it absolutely necessary these days to go to RR school for a line job?

Just keep applying and chuggin’ away until you get a call, that’s what I did.

No, Railroad High is not a requirement, but the human services people at the class 1s are looking to them more and more…but persistence is the key…keep applying till they offer an interview.
If you don’t want to be away from home for long stretches at a time, then try applying at a short line or regional, or like me, work for a class 3, switching and terminal road.
I go home every night…work regular hours with normal days off…

But again, just keep applying, and when they interview you, keep stressing that you don’t mind working out of doors, odd hours, and up to a 12 hour shift doesn’t bother you…because that’s exactly what you will work if hired…about the only thing that keep you from working is a hurricane…ok, we quit when it hails, but other than that, weather doesn’t count…

I still will go, for the obvious reason as well as I like telling my friends that while they’re in college, I’ll be in ‘Train school’
I don’t want to work for a RR immediately, so I can keep in touch with friends.
