The photo shows two locomotive units partly on their side, derailed upright, not on their edge which is not railroad language, who edits this stuff? The crew failed to stop at the signal, likely lack of air brake experiences and usage.

Looks as if this incident occurred at a turnout for a passing or holding track. I would not presume to know the cause. I will wait for the official determination.

The units involved were CP 9815 and UP 5528. The UP unit is part of a group of UP units on some sort of loan arrangement. It is more than just a horsepower hours swap. The 9815 was for many years the lead unit on the CPR Christmas Train. If you zoom in on the photo you can see the clips where the wiring/bulbs were fastened along the corner lines of the cab.

9815… definitely the ex Christmas Train unit. Was actually last working the holiday train in 2013. Obviously, signals were either ignored, brakes weren’t working properly, or the train was going too fast and didn’t stop in time. Would be interesting to know what happened.

I would call it a ‘collision’, not a ‘derailment’. BLET RCC heads will roll.
