Bangert1,
In another thread you mentioned you had replaced your Athearn Challengers MRC decoder with the Tsunami decoder and i have a couple questions about it.
I’ve been to the SoundTraxx site as well as Litchfield Stations site, and I guess I just don’t get it yet! So here’s my question. When you buy a Tsunami decoder you get just the decoder correct? So you just swapped the MRC decoder out and hooked up the new one to the original speakers? How difficult was the swap? Do they use the same kind of plugs or did you have to cut wires and solder in the Tsunami?
Thanks for your help.
Sorry, I’m not Bangert1, but I have installed 3 Tsunamis.
All three were in engines that already had Soundtraxx decoders. The Tsunamis don’t come with plugs – just wires, so yeah, some soldering was required. You can get a connector of some sort, but the soldering isn’t really that bad. Either way, you will have to solder the two speaker wires.
Here’s a link to Tony’s Tsunami page, with a bit of explanation and a link at the bottom to the connector. Call Tony’s if you need more info.

In most cases, they should work on the same speakers as the prior decoder. The main thing is that they’re 8 ohm speakers, which most are.
