Unfortunately I could only give you a rough guess on fitting the traction tyres. Most of my half dozen Heritage locos are without traction tyres. The only one I have from the new batch was already fitted with the traction tyres when it arrived.
My guess would be to remove the 2 nuts holding the rods to the axle you are replacing. Then undo the screws that hold the plastic base in place - and hope that small springs don’t fly everywhere. Hmm on second thoughts, I’d hold back with the replacement and seek guidance from someone who has done it already.
Hi Robert. The camera was on a tripod usually a couple of feet away from the layout, and the mic is on the camera, next to the lens. Remember though that with the zoom and panned shots, the loco in shot could be 10’ or more away from the camera.
The 0-8-0 #313 is a really loud engine anyway and what you hear is with the master volume control (CV128 - 0-255) turned down to about 170. The whole tender has been fully sealed and is used as the baffle, with the speaker facing down.
I have put together some extra footage for you, where the camera was sitting on the track a foot or so behind the caboose. This may put things into perspective.
Nice videos Jon! You have done some splended modeling on your layout. The sound decoders are improving, but are never going to sound like a real train. The bottom 3 or 4 octaves just aren’t there and can’t be with a 1" or smaller speaker.
The decoders are improving all the time, Ray. Maybe we should be looking at improving the speakers as well - the technology of the ones on the market is pretty ancient, and the best decoder around still sounds tinny with a crap speaker.
Absolutely! It would take an entirely new type of technology to be able to produce bass sound from such a small speaker. Maybe some kind of in the ear radio technology where you could be able to reproduce the sound with good fidelity. ??? Maybe sometime before I leave this planet there will be some faithful reproduction of the sounds of both steam and diesel. One can only hope!
Newbie here, don’t mean to stick my nose in, but isn’t there some way to have a subwoofer under the layout? Low frequencies are not directional so our brains/ears wouldn’t notice that their placement was static, and not moving.
Pretty sure, if fact, that I just read about this in a recent issue of MRR (in the letters section, IIRC).

Jon, are the engines the new Bachmanns steamers or decoders that you added? I am sort of happy with my BLI’s with the QSI sound. Then again they are the only DCC sound engines I have as well.
