TTX boxcars and the economy

The recession of the early 1980s had an impact on Railbox’s boxcar pool and some were placed into storage and later given over to individual railroads. So, how will the downtown of the current economy affect TTX’s FBOX and TBOX, ABOX and RBOX rosters? The same could be said of TTX’s fleet of intermodal doublestack and trailer cars.

More question to ask about the railbox box cars owned by TTX :

Will the railbox boxcars from the 1970’s be scrapped or be refurbished completely by TTX in the coming years?

Will more raibox boxcars be sold?

Will TTX order a new, different type of boxcar between 2010 and 2020?

In the past eight to to months I’ve noticed a definite uptick in RBOX and TBOX boxcars moving eastwards on Union Pacific’s manifest freights coming out of the Pacific Northwest. Quite a few of the cars look to be pretty new too.

Older RailBox equipment that was built in the 1970s and restencilled for individual railroad ownership like MP, SP, BN, etc. is something I haven’t noticed in quite awhile. Either those cars are still in storage or they’ve been scrapped.

Some of them (i.e. SP) have been repainted.

Times are tough for the railroads also. I would thnk that TTX is on a better position since the railroads can avoid more capital infuion into equipment using privately owned cars. The railroads basically lease all the rolling stock so there is a lot of money to be saved that could go toward the cost of fuel
