How’d the turkey do?
Not well.
Gee…nice to see the locomotive manufactuers are making sturdy, safe locomotive cabs. Seriously, should that have happened? I thought the windshields were bullet proof.
The FRA probably needs to have a hearing and issue new rules to prevent reoccurrence. Does Amtrak need “Turkey Crossing” signs?
Too bad it wasn’t a Guse, instead… LoL
WHERE HAVE ALL THE GHETTO BARS GONE.???
On pressurized aircraft, especially airliners, our windshield is about two inches thick. It is comprised of six layers of plastic separated by a shatterproof gel. The outside layer is glass so the windshield wipers have a hard surface to wipe on. The windshield has a gold leaf imbedded in the plastic through which 400 cycle 120 volt current is passed. This keeps the windshield hot, about 125 degrees, to melt any ice accumulation and keep the plastic soft and slightly flexible in case of a bird strike. There is a speed limit below 10,000 feet of 250 knots indicated which should limit the force of a bird strike but some large birds are found above 10,000 feet.
The turkey should be locked up for not having a ticket, and for boarding a moving train, not to mention destruction of Amtrak equipment, and assulting a train crewman. I sure the DHS will be on the job frisking and molesting all turkeys within range of the tracks, should be good for another 12,000 TSA agents and another 2 billion hollow points!
Christ! Now we are even getting a jump on Thanksgiving!!! Just kidding… BUT… Did the feds check and see if the engineer had his turkey hunting permit? That COULD be grounds for dismissal… They spend thousands to train these people, then they spend thousands to try to fire them… Rediculus!
T.C.
Based on the lawsuits by the Sierra Club for non-existent coal dust, can the Sierra club be sued for allowing turkeys to fly along the rail lines?

Wouldn’t blame the engineer if next Thanksgiving he opts for ham.
I believe the article says “the remains of the turkey”. I think its safe to assume its turkey burgers.
I suppose certain House Transportation Committee members will soon be asking Amtrak CEO Joe Boardman why the turkey wasn’t served on board that day, to keep food costs down. Seriously, I hope the engineer is doing well.
Are they sure it was a turkey or was it really a Goosie???
Few days ago someone was complaining somewhere else in the press about an excessive number of spares These are the kind of things that just come up.
Vasyl… That is just wrong… Haaahahahahaaaaa!!
They don’t use the ghetto grills anymore.?
Mr. Lipper: no, they don’t. The NEC is (thankfully!) a safer place today than 20-30 years ago, plus glazing is better.
In this case, I’m not sure how much a grill would have helped. Some, I suppose, but grills are really good for rigid things like rocks, not quite as good for squishy/sliceable things like birds. I’m thinking that at 80 MPH you’d still get most of the turkey hitting the windshield, just presliced by the grill bars.
