Hi all, I’ve got the 102 track plans book and after a lot of deliberation, I’ve decided to build the Turtle Creek Central with the expansion. I need to go ahead and buy the track for this layout. I was looking for a track list for it. If I buy the back-issues of MR from Jan, Feb, March 2003, when the layout was discussed, will this include the specific track list of materials? Thanks

Actually, the Turtle Creek Central series ran from January through April -03. The January issue lists tracklaying supplies and materials needed for the table construction, while the other three issues list additional items for completing the layout, such as roadbed, scenery materials, and buildings.

What issue was the expansion featured?

For the original layout, January had the track and table lumber materials; February had the items such as track nails, cork, ground throws; and March had suggested scenery items.

If you only need the track items, they were all code 83 Atlas items as follows:

#170 rail joiners; 15 pieces #500 flextrack; 4 #542 left hand snap switches; 4 #543 right hand snap switches; 1 #575 45-degree crossing; and 2 #577 90-degree crossings.

And if you have the possibility to go around the corner you can find some really good extensions: plan 31(the Metro Belt, my favorite) or plan 52 (Benedict)

You may want to pick up the back issues as some of the snap switches were modified. The process is explained in good detail by the author. Also if you go to the link below, you will find a variation of the expansion provided by fellow forum member Cuyama.

Just a bit more background information. The MR Turtle Creek had its origins from track plan #18, Turtle River Industrial District, in Lynn Westcott’s “101 Track Plans for Model Railroaders”, 1956.
