Just a matter of time before Chinese built locomotives start appearing in North America unfortunately.
Unfortunately? If the domestic manufacturer’s can’t compete–technically or economically–then bring them on. If anything their involvement will spur domestic innovation. Cheers!
They will have to meet the environmental standards in this country. That is something that EMD cannot do, at least right now. The Chinese engines in the picture really are not much to look at, just a box on wheels. I hope if China does export locomotives to this country that they try to stylize them a little.
David: I totally agree with you I truly hope EMD can get their act together.
George
You mentioned the environmental standards and their boxy styling which got me thinking if they could pass U.S. safety standards. Judging from the picture it doesn’t look like they offer much in the way of collision protection.
If the Chinese locos don’t meet emission regulations, we may be more likely to see their passenger cars and trains than diesel locos. Long term, though, they may be a tough competitor.
What I heard was that New Zealand wasn’t impressed with the Chinese Junk.
It appears as if they cabs on both ends. Is this true?
And if they should come here, all we will do, as we have done with all imports, is transfer the wealth of this country to someone else. Even if they build them here the net profits will end up in the bank of China not a US bank. Although, I’m not sure there are antmore US banks.
The monster that GE created by agreeing to build the Chinese diesel electric fleet orders they got 10 years ago, is now home to roost. GE taught the Chinese well.
Not only will no other manufacturer that these -2- build engines for China, but every bid any other global train manufacturer bids on will be facing this government supported engine manufacturer as a “competitor”.
Already happening in Africa, Mexico and Australia.
Boston gets what it deserves. The money will go to buy new Chinese warships for their Pacific fleet. We’ve got to be some kind of nuts. If we buy from Asian firms, support our Japanese of Korean allies.
KiwiRail had to withdraw the DL’s from service because of asbestos in paint applied inside the locomotives. Locomotives gradually being returned to service but there have been other ‘teething’ problems. Considering the age of the EMD and GE locos in KiwiRail’s current fleet I doubt very much if the Chinese built units will last as long as these locos. KiwiRail needed cheap locos as the government is keeping them afloat.
