This is my idea of American Flyer 2-rail. 
Thanks to mersenne6, I know this is an American Flyer #4 locomotive, dating from 1927-1929. It’s a windup, so there’s no need for that third rail. Oh, and check out my high-dollar track clip. It’s missing one of its four wheels, but the spring is still good and strong, so it’ll run if I can ever track one down. The key is long gone too, but I can fashion a makeshift key out of some pieces of hobby shop brass.
For now it’s strictly a shelf piece.
Dave, that is an awesome train. And its almost 80 years old. Awesome

Thanks. I picked this up in a mixed lot with a Marx transformer and a loop of track and a low-end Marx tinplate loco and tender. About half of the loop of Flyer track was still in there. I found the tender in pieces in the bottom of the box and had to put it back together.
Definitely one of my better finds. It always turns heads, and in that condition, it was cheap.
Cool find Dave! There are companies that make repro keys…usually pretty inexpensive. I’ve found a good source for the keys is some larger antique shops.

That’s an excellent find! I’ve always loved these trains. They have such charm to them. There’s nothing like winding up an engine and letting it speed down the track!
