Swiss Railways… nothing else like it in the world!

If only the US had half the sense of the Swiss and invested in its own passenger rail.

Congratulations, Swiss Railroads on 100 years! I wonder which was first. Swiss Rail or Swiss Watches on being on time? Either one, I hope that you keep on time for many years to come!

Lötschberg tunnel is still a vital link for motorists. On a drive from Zürich to Visp, my Google Maps instructions said to drive up a valley, take the train, then drive down the valley on the other side of the mountains. It didn’t say that the train to take was an Auto Train! I was totally surprised to pull up to a toll gate near the tunnel portal, pay 40 Francs (About 40 dollars), then drive onto a rake of open, monolevel flatcars with a roofs to protect windshields against falling rocks. After 15 minutes of bouncing around and being deafened by the noise of the train bouncing off solid rock walls, the train rolled to a gentle stop just outside the south portal, and all the vehicles just drove off and down into the next valley. What an awesome experience!
