Type / Brand of paint for buildings?

OK, now that I have got the glue question figured out, before I start building my buildings, I’d like advice on paint. I have not really painted any structures in the past.

I have a couple of DPM kits and a Walther’s Cornerstone (Bud’s Trucking) and am planning to get a lot more.

I lucked out at the latest show and picked up a used and well painted and weathered two stall engine house for $20. I may look for more deals like that since I can save $ and not have to build and paint!

What type of paint is recommended on plastic kits like those? Spray vs Brush on - water base vs ???

What brands are good? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

For brick buildings, I like rust-colored primer, sprayed from a hardware store rattle can. But, be careful that you don’t use the same paint on too many buildings. Mixing up the colors on a street makes it look like the neighborhood “grew,” with structures built in differnt eras. I have a couple of different cans from different manufacturers. Some of the Walthers structures can simply be mortared and weathered, using the original color.

I’ve also used cheap craft-store acrylics, applied with a brush, for small buildings.

Any issues with spray paint and plastic? Are they all safe for plastic - ie: won’t eat it?

The spray paints and primers mentioned here should all be fine.

The way to test is to spray on a sprue piece to determine if it will eat the plastic.

I use Testors Spray primer in gray (for dark top colors) or white (for light ones), and both Polly-Scale and Testors ModelMaster Acryl acrylic paints.

I have both brush painted and airbrushed with these paints, with excellent results. If the result isn’t pleasing, it’s due to my painting skills, not the materials.

I’ve never had a problem with any of them from Lowes or True Value, mostly the Rustoleum or Valspar products. But, the suggestion about trying them out on a piece of sprue plastic is a good one.

While you’re there, pick up a can of Rustoleum multi-colored Textured finish in black. This makes a great surface for your roofs. I usually use some weathering powders to add a bit of sooty black and rust to the roof surface as well.
