The March 2006 issue of Trains had a fascinating artilce on "How heavy can freight cars get?’ Good information on new types of rails.

My question: Does someone know of a web source/article where I can get more information on older rails/ties used by railroads, say up to the '60’s. I’m especially intrested in pictures.

Find a university or similar library that has a good archive, and look up some old issues of Railway Age, Progressive Railroading, and, if they have it, Railway Track and Structures. These will have various photos embedded in the articles that probably will meet your needs.
