i have read about r.r. clubs that sponsor ‘engineer-for-a day’ rides… for $300-500 (depends on which engine is wanted), you receive several hours of ‘look-see’ at the controls of an engine… then you sit in the main chair and run it… a club may have 1 or 2 engines or a half-dozen… steam and diesel–several models offered depending on what they could buy and restore cheap…
one club only allows going back and forth for 1-2 hours… another offers 4-hour slots… they do this for 2-3 months a year… one offered to actually travel miles along the r-o-w to ‘deliver’ loads and return with ‘empties’…
clubs were located in il, ca and vt… has anyone tried this? how was it?
I’ve been to the Portola railroad museum in Ca. and rented a loco… They have a balloon track that you go round and round for 1hr. Switchers are $95 p/hr, road units are $125 p/hr and if you rent 1 of each it’s $200. Ihad a lot of fun and cant wait to go back.
I know this place where all you need to do is go to a class for 3 weeks, then work for 6 months and go back to school for 5 weeks and after that you get to drive any loco on the RR, everyday!
Not for everybody but it is a trip…
