UK members: Oct. Issue

Have any of the UK members recieved thier Oct. issue yet? I’m still waiting…

Hi,

Mine arrived this morning (cheshire), cleverly disguised as 102 track plans. Hope you get yours soon.

UK question: Just curious, what does an American publication on MR contribute to a modeler in the UK? unless you were into American trains? Is there an equivalent publication that informs UK modelers?

Can I bust out a response to this?

The influence of American culture on the rest of the world has been substantial - some would contend that it’s perhaps too overpowering and insidious. This influence includes industrial enterprises such as the Railroads. I could, if I wanted to, model the Railway of my own country whose early steam locomotives included American Baldwin & Rogers. Really, its a pretty subjective thing. I have a liking for what I term, industrial art and design that originates in the US. As well as novels, painters, music styles as well as musical instrument design, motor vehicles, ships and airplanes. For a long while, the US was a source of much that was pleasing to the eye and uplifting of the sprit and edifying in it’s bold interpretation of much the came before that was, to my mind, dull and prosaic by comparison to most stuff that came from the drawing tables of a youthful and developing nation full of optimism.

I believe that much of what I have just said probably applies to many folks who model US prototype railroads or freelance pikes. The rest is my own personal appreciation of a subject that influenced me in many of the choices I have made over the last fifty decades or so. This is not to say though, that most modelers outside of the US probably do choose to model their indigenous railway systems.

The wonderful thing about our hobby is that - and to paraphrase the traveling food guy, Andrew Zimmern, if you like it, model it.

Cheers.

Bruce.

there are several model railroad magazines published in the UK . they stock 2 or 3 of them at my local magazine shop , i guess those are just the major ones and there are several more ‘smaller’ mags .

here in Toronto there are several clubs that model British railways and many more individuals . so it’s not unusual to walk in a hobby shop and see non-American locos , structures etc.

there is also one local train show one weekend a year just for British modelers . i’ve been a couple of times and there are a lot of nice layouts on display

50 decades are ye? That’s pretty long in the tooth.[:-^]

I guess that I would be very long in the tooth - that’s if I had any.[%-)]

Got mine a few days ago.

Only got my September issue last week at WH Smiths - another couple of weeks yet for the new one.
