I started an unusual scratch of a 2-4-4-2 w/ a two inch D boiler that has turned into a 2-6-6-2 w/ a three inch D boiler. The only dificulty is that I found one 4-6-0 in HO scale with the size drivers, relizing that it would be too much stress to fab them up to G guage standerds, I"ve run out of ideas to finish the thing. That flood didn’t help ither. Any advice? [%-)]
think the only option is to save your money and buy one lgb 040 tank working and matching drivers as spares plus some smaller pilot wheels

Well I scratch build unusual locomotives and yes I have also found that wheels are a problem… There are several routes (no pun intended) out of this dilemma. The first is to find a machine shop and have your wheels turned from mild steel rod and use external fly cranks. The G1MRA web site will give you the raw specs for your wheel. The second is to buy pre made wheels and here in the UK there is really only SLATERS that produce them for gauge one. I use the wheels from IP Engineering which are 2 feet diameter (in my scale) but the axle diameter is 1/8 inch thus they fit 32mm and 45mm track. regards ralph
Its for LGB track and the problem is I can’t find a set of drivers that are the right raduis (about 1/2 inch) with a slot for a thick enough axle to hold up the weight of the locomotive and take the tork of the gears.(The gear usually spinns free of tthe axle)
LGB track is 45mm is Gauge 1! The gear slipping problem is a common one. The simplest method is to drill through the gear and thence through the axle locking the two together with a pin. The more complex one is to produce a square hole and then drift a bar through the gear wheel. regards ralph
