Unable to post with Firefox

I am suddenly unable to post with Firefox, I am using an older version of Internet Explorer to post this. However, I really don’t like IE. So,

My Internet Explorer works fine. But I suppose a little inconvenience is not too big a price to pay for a browser you like better.

It must be a problem on your computer because I only use Firefox. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help.

Good luck.

Lee

My Firefox had a release update yesterday. It may have been a fix for the problem you’re experiencing.

To check to see if your Firefox is up to date, click Help, the About Firefox, then you’ll see a box that indicates what release your current Firefox is, along with a Check for Updates button, if you want to verify your install status.

My Firefox has been a pain in the neck the last few months. It is up to date but what happens is I sometimes lose the pictures on my homepage and anything else I open. When this happens I lose my ability to post on the forums, update e-mail etc. Try going on railpictures.net under these conditions. If I go to Internet Explorer everything works fine. Weird. The other remedy is to restart the computer and Firefox works fine after that (for awhile anyway)

I think the first thing I would do is run a good antivirus and malware program and next, see what is wrong with the computer settings. There may be something running in the background that is enterfering with Firefox. Could that be why when you reboot FF works?

Good luck.

It’s possible there is a malware issue. However, even IT professionals who like it (like my wife) acknowledge that FF can be a bit of a memory hog. If you have an older machine or otherwise insufficient memory, then rebooting does help. That may be a sign it’s time to consider upgrading your machine.

Chrome is relatively easy on memory in comparison to FF, but then you have to be OK with Google being into everything you do. That appeals to some and repulses others. YMMV

Roger,

What version of Firefox are you using?

I am using 14.0.1 for this post without any problem.

Good luck

Paul

I am using Fire Fox version 15.0.1.

And this morning it is working just fine. Oh, well.

With websites using more flash ads, etc websites are becoming memory hogs regardless of the browser. However, Google Chrome uses the least memory at this point anyway. Adding more ram will help. It’s hard to have good performance with less than 4 GB ram.

Thanks for the info… The computer is relatively new (for me) and I am running Windows Vista. I use Webroot and scan the computer at least once each day. I also use the Webroot system tools to clean up temporay files. The computer was last debugged about a month ago for a malware / virus infection. It received a clean bill of health at the time. The FF issue however started way before the malware / virus made itself known and continues to this day. It is not a constant problem but an issue that may appear once a week or once every couple of weeks.

Thanks Again,

John R

John,

I just upgraded to W7 from XP on my laptop. Still on XP on my main box, so I don’t have direct experience with Vista. There should be a way to adjust the caching to limit FF’s taking too much memory, as IIRC that’s one of the solutions that’s been suggested to me based on looking at Mozilla’s knowledge base. You might try poking around there if you’re like me and not real computer savvy.

Or you can Google “Firefox memory hog” and get lots of potential advice…[;)]

The FF really seems to vary all over the place. With me, it’s an occasional irritant, but others like you seem to have bigger issues. For me, it’s the best option, as I’m not into IE Exploder or Chrome for a variety of reasons.

Looks like Firefox works for me, but not the old Netscape Navigator. I imagine, since NN is no longer updated, that this is a permanent problem. O well.

Thank you Mike.

I am not really computer savvy and had never heard of FF being a memory hog. I’ll look into it further and see what I can do to eliminate some of the memory consumption if that is possible.
