Walthers 2010 HO Reference Book, Super Detailing Parts, pages 908 through 956; but most of them will be plastic, not metal. What is the reference you saw?
I think he’s talking about the coupler buffer plate that Details West offers. ST&P, If your LHS carries super-detailing parts they should be able to get this part for you. Installation shouldn’t be too difficult and you’re probably going to have to find another way to mount the couplers on Athearn locos when using this part.
As Tony notes, if you close-in the pilot beneath the couplers, you’ll need to body-mount the couplers. An easy way to do so is to stack thick (.060" or more) sheet styrene on the underside of the end walkways, using a good solvent-type cement. You’ll need to make it thick enough so that your couplers will be at exactly the right height, and ensure that these coupler mounting pads don’t interfere with the swing of the trucks. Assemble your choice of Kadee couplers in their supplied draught gear box, and, after test-fitting to determine the proper location, drill and tap for a 2-56 screw for each end of the loco.

I’ll try to be more specific here than in the original post. First ,saw on Ebay a reference to a detail part that goes under the hole where the coupler sticks out of the body of the loco leaving the hole for the coupler. This is on a Athearn engine. Second, i have a Proto 2000 GP 18 that is supposed to have such a part on both ends but one is missing. The one i have looks like some sort of platform/ grill or screen and is added after the body is installed over the drive. It attaches to the front of the body. I am fairly new at this and don’t know some of the proper names of these parts.Hope this makes sense?
The part that I referenced in my first post would go in the pilot opening, closing the large space and leaving the hole for the coupler. Looking at the drawing without it being mounted on an engine is probably making it difficult to see what it actually does. Based on what you’re saying, and how I’m understanding it, I’ll bet this is the part that was mentioned on ebay.
This sounds like a foot board to me (got a pic?), does it look like this? I’m not sure if Walthers has any extras they can send you, but asking them by shooting them an email or calling would be a good idea.
Nobody was born with this knowledge, it takes time to learn the proper terms. Hopefully you get your question answered.
Thanks, that is very close to what is missing on my GP 18 and i assumed something similar is what i saw on Ebay. Not computer savvy and will have to learn how to send the pictures. Will definitely contact W to see if they have one.

Check the Walthers website - I think both Details West and Detail Associates make pilot footboards in a couple of styles.
One I recently used, Details West, was cast metal
