Mike,

You might want to check out the post about Switch Motors in this same forum. They explain many types in use. You may find it helpful for your ques. And as far as Your ground color for your yard. What is the area of your yard?? Rural or city or country that would help in finding ground color…

Cheers.

Frank

For switch machines, motorized ones are better. I favored the Tortoise before Tam Valley came out with their servo systems. I like those better now. The main reasons are they are smaller, less expensive, and the throw distance can be programmed.

As for ground cover color, I use a base color of blended earth sprinkled in wet brown paint. I use this as a very first layer before I do anything else including ballast. Next is ballast, then on to the green stuff. For ballast in a yard, it can be cinders if you have steam engines, or dirty gray ballast.

I am going to go with the BLue Point switch machines, and use their manual kit… think that looks pretty cool and easy to install…

The 'Blue Point’ is a ‘manual’ device! There is not switch machine included with it. It just provides the ‘linkage’ to the turnout and electrical contacts.

I am going to go manual… I like the flex kit starter kit… Manual might be alittle easier to deal with and install…
