Union Carbide Tank Cars (1950s)

Does anyone know what the tank cars that Union Carbide used during the Transition Era looked like? I remember seeing ones in the 1970s with the logo “Chemicals from Union Carbide” (white on top greeen on the bottom) but I have been unable to produce any photos which are dated back to the 1950s.

I think the one you are thinking about was all silver. I had one once and seem to remember that’s what the color was. You might also try an Internet search and see if you can come up with sime pics. Bob

is this the one?

Hansel is this what you are looking for?

And by the way here’s how it works-you post a question and then you come back to see the replies to your question. I did a lot of searching to find this photo to try and help you out. This kind of action has happened to me a couple of times and I consider it to be RUDE!! Some manners wouldn’t hurt either like PLEASE and THANKS.

That’s all I have to say-Thanks-Bob

Thanks Bob.

db,

That is the one I have seen, but I was not sure which year that one was built? I saw this tank in the 1970s, but I have no idea when it was first produced.

Thanks,

Hansel

Here is a link to the rail archives photos of the Union Carbide tank cars.

Hansel-there is another option if you can’t find the model you are looking for. If you can find a picture then you can get an undecorated tank than comes close to the pic and some Union Carbide decals and make your own.

igoldberg-I checked out that web site you posted for Hansel and from what I saw he could probably get away with using a 40’ single dome tank car. None of the pics I saw had Union Carbide on them so all he would need is the proper reporting marks.

Good luck Bob

Bob,

That is sort of what I am doing. I have undecorated 42’ Roundhouse tank cars and I would like to eventually model the Union Carbide (UC) plant that is in Charleston. I have seen two kinds of paint jobs on UC tank cars, but have been unable to find a date on those cars or pictures to verify that they are of the right time frame to model. I am wondering if UC even owned any tank cars back then (1950s), or were they UTLX or GTLX cars marked as such with no UC markings at all?

Thanks, Hansel

Hansel-while searching around for pics all the UC cars I found had reporting marks on them but not the UC name. You might want to try doing a search for tank cars,or possible UC itself .

Sorry if I can’t be of more help.Bob
