A pilot is just a dude who knows the line and tells the crew that’s not familier with the line to identify the geographical features, I’ll see If I can get a hold of Steve Lee and find out.

UPTRAIN- I don’t know about the 4-8-4? sorry.
Although- at 1400 hrs yesterday (01-22-04), I got some beautiful shots of 4-6-6-4 UP 3985 in Scott City, MO The ambient air temp was in the low thirties. Definately made for some beautiful smoke, and steam plumes!!!

I didn’t get to ride in the Cab of the 3985…I was supposed to ride in the cab on Sunday…[:(] I knew very well how cold it was…I stood outside for 6 hours…and yes I saw it at Bernie…the track gang had the track tore up near Idalia and had the whole damn railroad shut down for like 4 hours!!!

They held the 3985 at Scott City for about 15mins. I heard the dispatcher talking about the track gang. There was one at mp 123, on #1 main, all south bounders were using #2. This had things slowed up for a few mins.
Sunday- Wow, now that was a disappointment. I was at Chester for two hours before I got word that she had broke down. I was hoping to get some action shots rolling south along Rte 3, in Ill, on her way to Gorham.
Zach, I am so sorry you didn’t get to ride the cab. Wow, to get to do something and then have it taken away from you. This is a real bumber. My heart goes out to you. [:(]
I got to get up in the cab and ride for 500 feet or so…backwards because we were backing off a crossing.
I was kinda aggravated too.

When I last saw Union Pacific’s proud Northern she was in a sad state of repair. The boiler was set aside in the locomotive shop, the tender was outside, and the cab was being rebuilt in the roundhouse. I am quite shure that she will run again, but it will be several more years, in my estimation. As far as I know the boiler is but just a shell, and the steam crew is still working on repairing all of the damage sustained from the tube failure.

What happens with a tube failure? As in what gets torn up inside the boiler?
Depends a lot on just what the failure was – but one has to remember that the whole idea of the tubes is to keep the fire on one side (very hot, atmospheric pressure) and the water on the other side (also very hot, but at high pressure). Even a relatively minor failure – such as a leak where the tubes are rolled into the headers – can result in severe distortion of the headers and damage to all the nearby tubes. A major leak – such as a collapse of a tube – can result in a full scale boiler explosion, which is a pretty spectacular affair. I don’t know what happened to the 844, but it sounds like, fortunately, it was actually relatively minor… as tube failures go… since it looks like she’ll be able to be put back together and run again. Steve Lee deserves a medal of some kind!
i have a few pictures of 844 restoration I got them off of a yahoo group I belong to. I will try to get them uploaded to my yahoo briefcase for public viewing. I havent seen the engine in perosn since I was 12 I am 33 now. Grandpa took me when she was in FT Worth I got to go up in the cab you either have to be a kid or have a kid to get that opportunity it seems. Lucky for me I got a little boy who likes steam engines!
