Is the river tidal in Portland?
Is the river tidal in Portland?
I guess Uncle Pete does not realize that most places terminate work early enough, often at 5 or 6 a.m., to allow the normal weekday commute to commence.
Factors beside serving commuters influence closure hours.
High and low tides and water traffic, Coast Guard permission, after all it is a lift bridge in large busy port.
Chamber of Commerce wanting normal access for business, entertainment sports and cultural events…as in “weekend”
And, light rail and trolley services’ availability changed many people’s dependence on modes of transport…cars and buses aren’t the first or best alternative in busy thriving urban areas. But, they use the Steel Bridge too…they’re not as desirable anymore, when there’s a modern vital alternative.

Yes, it is all the way up the Columbia to as far as the Bonneville Dam, which is why it is located where it is, at that point where the tides no longer affect the river flow.
Hate to inform you geography buffs, but the Steel Bridge spans the Willamette River, not the Columbia. Usually, the lower deck (former Espee, now UP) of the lift bridge could be raised while leaving the upper deck (road traffic and Max light rail) intact.
What? No MAX? Aw Gee golly whillickers. Maybe they should try bicycle lanes like they’re pushing off on us in Spokane, the land of ice & snow & Steep hills…
It is good the UP is spending some money to maintain the historic structure. Plus since the bridge can be operated in two sections allowing auto and trolly traffic while boat traffic passes under is very unique. Then if the boat is an ocean liner or too big both sections lift. And yes there is a bike path on a large pedestrian walk right next to the RR tracks. Great place for girl and train watching.
