Union Pacific ‘Centennial’ to pinch-hit for E9 on Denver Post Frontier Days Special

I thought the Denver Post train was always pulled by steam.

F SMITH I believe 844 is down for repairs this year but I think she will be back next year.

UP 1989 DRGW Heritage diesel has been at Burnham Shop in Denver all week, perhaps as a backup unit for the Special.

What’s wrong with 3985?

3985 is down for major overhaul and class repairs and according to steam program personnel may be out of action for some time. Asked if it was permanently down for the count the employee said that UP has the resources so that no member of the Heritage fleet is down for the count, and that includes 2-10-2 5511 which has had rumors aplenty about what the future holds for this “standard” engine of the UP. Needless to say that all the current resources are being put toward 844 and 4014m as well they should be.

So who needs the A & B units? 6936 is more powerful than any A-B-A lashup.
