Union Pacific conductor accused of stealing diesel horns

“Too bad, needless. How many loco’s get scrapped every day, full of souvenirs that many fans will pay good money for on ebay?”

Virtually none. Usable horns (as well as any other parts in decent condition that can be easily removed or salvaged) are typically removed by the railroads for parts or reuse before the loco is sent to the scrapper. If the horn makes it to the scrapper on the locomotive, the scrapper has a ready market for them via eBay, truckers, and the like.

Several of the most prolific air horn “dealers” on eBay in the past had arrangements with local scrapyards to acquire “wholesale” any horns that made it to them, until the scrap yards caught on and started selling them themselves.

Too bad, needless. How many loco’s get scrapped every day, full of souvenirs that many fans will pay good money for on ebay?

I doubt that he’ll be “tooting” his way out of this!

And what did the dummy get from E-bay per stolen horn? … besides the room and board in lock-down.
Stupid is as stupid does!

Mr. Smith, please re-read the story as they reported the correct amount.

This is not an isolated incident. It’s occurring in other parts
of the country. CSX has dismissed employees for the same thing, in other words the employee was given a choice, resign or go to jail.

Horns run about a $1000, not $15,000…

And who said all the morons are in congress.

How stupid could you be?? Either you really hated your job, or you really hated your freedom. Or a combination of both. I hope the fellas in prison don’t ask you to be the conductor on their train. There’s no hours of service violations in prison.

One of my former friends got a job with the UP once and during training, they wanted to show how to hang and arm EOT’s but they ran out. Two minutes later he walked over with one and when asked where he found it “Oh it was in my trunk!”

For once I agree with you Goosie.

Interestingly enough, another batch of horns were seized from a residence in 2009 by UP, KCS and BNSF agents. Go to wwwrailroadpolice.com (photos) for that and the history of railroad police over the years.

Stupid thing is, he probably sold them for scrap, the metal robbery in this area is unbelievable. Every church in this area is missing copper downsports. Vacant housing and some recently built housing is losing copper weire and pipes. They every started stealing the condensors from outside Air conditioner units.
