Rest eternal grant unto him, o God, and let light perpetual shine on him.
Recently my vocation brought me into prolonged contact with Union Pacific and its employees. I was impressed by the number of staff wearing Jim Young support bracelets for their stricken leader. The unspoken support of one’s employees speaks volumes as to one’s character. This is a terrible loss for the railroad and railroading.
Not knowing Mr. Young, I cannot express my reaction to this news any better than was done in Daniel Carleton’s posting. May his immediate family and his extended family at U.P. go forth with the strength gained from knowing and loving him.
By all that has been said by those who knew him, Jim Young was a first-class executive and a hell of a nice guy. I even met him briefly at a Southern Pacific historical gathering, and was impressed by his knowledge and grasp of his company and his industry.
He set his standards high and expected no less from those who dealt with him and with Union Pacific.
Pancreatic cancer is THE worst. So many have died from it before what otherwise would have been their alloted time on earth, and it runs its course so rapidly in most cases. Personally I have had a half-dozen friends die from pancreatic cancer, the youngest at age 38 and none over 60…except, if I may call him “friend,” Jim Young.
I am sad to hear of his passing. From what I know about him (and also what people are saying and what this article says) he was a great guy to work with and work for. I am sad to hear of such an excellent railroader passing away, undoubtedly 20-30 years too soon.
He will be greatly missed by the entire Union Pacific family. He was a great leader and gentleman.
Jim young RIP my friend. You were without a dought the best president UPRR ever had. As you watch from above ill do my part to make you proud. A great man takin from us much to soon.
I would like to suggest to UP that something significant like the
New Boone bridge or the new facility in Eastern New Mexico
be Named after him.

It was disturbing to learn Mr. Young was ill and disheartening to read of his passing. He has entered the UP pantheon with the late John Kenefick and others who have made UP a
“one of a kind” organiztion in America and the world.
