Union Pacific DPU Question.

At 9AM at Rochelle,Ill an Eastbound Coal Train just rolled by the Web cam. The Train had 3 AC4400CW’s on the point. Why wasn’t the Third unit on the rear as the DPU? Why 3+0 instead of 2+1? Allan.

Almost certainly the train will be interchanged to another railroad in Chicago. No eastern
railroad uses DPU out of Chicago. It is easier to not use a DPU than it is to remove the DPU in Chicago, especially if the train is delivered directly to the eastern (or midwestern)
carrier’s yard. BNSF is the same way.

What not Email uprr.com to get the proper answer?

No because Union Pacific ain’t got the time to answer every stupid Question from Railfans like us. It is much better to come to Trains dot com for Questions to get real answers. Besides…I don’t wan’t to go bothering the UPRR anyways. Allan.

Here’s one UP employee who believes that Beaulieu knows what he’s talking about. That is one correct answer, and is probably the most likely reason to run them that way.

Thanks [bow] I have seen alot of ,as they used to say,“black snakes” ( that’s unit coal trains) roll thru KCMO and one would have DPU and the very next would not. Makes sense.
