Union Pacific making progress on preparing Big Boy to move

I am really excited for this to finally be happening. I cannot wait to see this giant back alive and where it belongs. On the rail pulling trains.

Mel & Mo, Lou Menk is certainly a villain for his attitude toward the Q steam program, but you can’t blame him for 5632 being scrapped.

This will be a public relations coup for Union Pacific like no other, they are to be commended.

Anyone know what route UP will use to haul the engine from Pomona, CA to Cheyenne, WY? Would love to see it come through Sacramento/Donner Pass.

I hope somebody is gonna video all this.

Is this engine complete?

No mean-spirited comment from Guse?

Many thanks to UP

I never even dreamed that U.P. would pull a Big Boy from display and re-build one, AWSOME!

The locomotive is missing water in the tender and coal. Otherwise UP picked this one because it is in the best condition compared to the others.

Railyard Productions will be there for her first run! Can hardly wait for the rebuild! In the meantime we have Pere Marquette 1225 being hydro tested this week and patiently await her Return to Rails excursion in March.

I live out in Burbank I’ll so Record the Historic Moment !

This is certainly a dream come true. Not in my wildest dreams did I ever realize the restoration of a Big Boy to operating condition would ever occur. Long Live UP’s Steam Program. I hope some schmuck in UP’s management do away it’s Steam Program like NS and CB&Q did in the past. Oh thanks to Lou Menk, CB&Q 5632 got scrapped and Mr. Menk had NO regrets.

Ed, have you ever been to Kennefic Park in Omaha? I think
you’ll regret not using Mega Movers instead of track panels.

Now have a reason to start a bucket list. Thank you Mr. UP!

While on vacation took in the Forney museum in Denver and their Big Boy. There was a comment that the U.P. converted one Big Boy to burn oil but it was not a success. Has this been taken in to account? I hope U.P. has success on restoring this Big Boy and would some day would like to see it or a video of it operating, that would be a blessing to this old senior steam fan.

It appears to me that BNSF does not have a steam program. Is that the only Class I that does not? My dad worked the Great Northern, I worked a track gang and we lived by the Northern Pacific main line. I’d sure like to see some of their steam back in action. There is a beauty on display in Wishram, Washington. It’s a big GN 4-8-4 and it is superficially very clean. I even wrote to Warren Buffet but if you can believe it he didn’t answer.

Oh Wow!! What a project! Thanks UP I will be looking
forward to seeing this locomotive run again.

Hope you will come out Portland way. We enjoyed the
recent visits by 844!!

Now if CSX could take the former C&O H-8 Allegheny #1604 out of the B&O Museum in Baltimore and put it back in steam, that would really be something. There has been a controversy in regard to whether that 2-6-6-6 design was a better puller than the Big Boy, and it might be possible to settle that once and for all!
