C40-8W that UP sold back to General Electric. A bunch of them are leased by CN and are running around with GECX reporting marks. The line through the UP lettering and logo is to make it clear that it is no longer a UP engine.

The black line drawn throught the Corporate name: ‘Union Pacific’ on locomotives removed from their corporate fleet; is a common practice to indicate that particular unit is no longer counted as theirs [ UP’s] . They can then be run under a different owners system, until re-numbered, or re-painted, into a new scheme.
Several years back WATCO ran a fleet of 6 motored locomotives, formerly UPRR units, on their ‘then new’ A&O RR; until they lost out, and CSX reclaimed that property(?). Those untils were then brought back to this area, and ran til they were eventually, repainted into WATCO’s black and yellow color scheme. My guess is that each major railroad handles their fleet removals to suit their own needs(?).
AAR practice/ rule (“whitelining”)
A bunch of ex-CSX Dash-8’s and BNSF/Santa Fe SD75’s got the same treatment. CN was leasing anything they could get their hands on this past year. With many new GE AC units now being delivered the leasers are starting to be returned.
