A male Union Pacific railroad worker was killed by a train southeast of Pasco on Tuesday morning.

John P. Schneider, 54, of Spokane Valley, died near Wallula, according to Walla Walla County Coroner Richard Greenwood.

Walla Walla Fire District 5 responded to a call for help at 5:30 a.m. along the railroad track about a half mile north of Madame Dorian Park on Highway 12, said Lt. Justin Lessard.

Walla Walla Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers of the employee,” said Justin Jacobs, spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad.

Jacobs said more information will be released as it becomes available.

Beyond the name and age of the deceased we know nothing.

I have not heard anything official yet. Someone at the yard office said it involved a shoving move. Contact was lost and a contracted transport van went back to see if his radio had quit on him and if he needed to use the van’s radio to continue the move. The driver was said to have found him.

railroading is still a dangerous profession. Have to be alert at all times. Dad knew guys who were killed when he worked in the yards checking car seals. Had to keep swinging his lantern as he walked around. Days of steam and no yard tower lights like today.
