It’s amazing what you can find on YouTube. Mystery Science Theater riffed on these two old safety films, which were produced by the UP in the late 50’s or early 60’s. Both feature cheesy acting, and vintage UP motive power. The goofy comments of Tom Servo, Crow, and Mike Nelson help liven things up. Get some popcorn, because each one is 20 minutes long.
The first one is about driving safety, and UP manages to work in some grade crossing safety advice. It includes some shots of their Gas Turbine.
The second is about safety in the workplace, and includes some interesting yard and backshop footage. Are there any UP fans out there who recognize which facility was used for the film?
MST3K - Days of our Years
[Edit] Just realized the copyright on this one is 1955.
Great timing!!! There’s nothing on TV right now. (I really miss MST3K[:(])
UP and other lines had films you could borrow for free years ago. I saw Last Of The Giants on film as a kid, its actually an excellent film. I recall seeing one on the Nickel Plate talking about their frieght business. They made other stuff but they prolly didnt have the acting quality.
Walt Disney made educational films I recall a thing on body health, you’d never see this in the theatre, but it was done really well all animated.
Great stuff, thanks. Too many quotes, but I love the bit in the first one when Servo puts his ear to the track “I can hear it”
“So the leading cause of accidents is joy, sex, and old age?” [(-D][(-D][(-D]
I love MST3K. I remember in one episode, I think it was in one of the Gamera movies, there was one scene with a really cheesy model set, and one of them (I think Crow) said “It’s HO scale Japan.”
“Days of our Years” looks like L.A., especially with the palm tree and what I remember of the buildings in the East L.A. shops.
Bob Hayes
Funny you should mention that. They showed us a Disney geometry film in grade school. They used Goofy shooting pool as a teaching aid. Helped my geometry grade AND my pool game.[8]
Some of the funnier lines:
“If you paid no attention to the signs, didn’t look, and didn’t listen, then you deserve to die.”
“Trains are blameless, holy creatures!”
“Gee lady, sorry about your boyfriend… So, you want to have a drink? Maybe at the bar car over there… oh, I suppose a train joke is inappropriate. Sorry about that.”
“Why don’t they look, Ralf, tell me. Why don’t they look?” “We’re deep Ernie.”
“Union Pacific makes the best movies!”
“Go in peace to love and serve Union Pacific.”
“Remember to worship at the railroad of your choice.”
[(-D] Congrats to the cast of MST3K for making safety videos fun! And thanks for sharing, SteamFreak!
That’s the conclusion I came to, especially after noticing that the opening credits list the production company’s headquarters as New York and Beverly Hills.
Some of my favorite lines:
“Kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit!”
“Oh, almost ran over Kissinger.”
“…and don’t get a haircut like that.”
“I have no feelings for you!” - “What?”
“This is a loveless relationship, I want out!” - “What?”
“I’m repulsed by your touch!” - “What?”
“Could you identify this bucket of your brother?”
“Oh my God, he’s snapped!”
