What a wonderful project. As a boy, I saw these locomotives running through the mountain country between Cheyenne and Utah. Certainly a powerful locomotive that deserves to be restored for all of us train buffs to see in action.
The problem with a Big Boy is that it is a Big Boy. It was designed for a particular application and required specialized infrastructure (e.g., track curvature, turntable, etc.) It is a glorious machine and I would like to see one in steam, but is it a reasonable thing to do?
Never saw one run but wouldn’t I love to! I thought these locos were all fired with coal…Am I wrong? An oil conversion would be expensive and running it really expensive.
I could not agree more Allan. I would really love to see a Big Boy in steam again.
This whould be great if it happens.
bnig boys fot big boys.
bnig boys fot big boys.

Sounds like the Pomona group said no.
Can only hope it happens. A fully operational Big Boy would be a joy to behold! The Yellowstone’s and Allegheny’s are silenced
forever, but if there is a chance of lighting a fire in the belly of
a Big Boy and letting him Talk the Talk and “Walk The Walk” would be totally awesome.
Certainly would be a major tourist attraction for the Mid West!
I think I’d rather see 3985 operational again. It is much more flexible to move about the United States than a 4000 could ever be.

UP already has a 4-6-6-4 running, why not go for the only remaining cab-forward? SP is now part of UP… heritage is heritage…
Let’s get that cab-forward out on the high-iron!!
Why has the 3985 been out of active service? Does anyone know
Big Boys equal BIG DOLLARS but wouldn’y it nice to see one restored. I would like to see a comparison running costing between the Big Boy and the Challanger.
In 1953 I traveled across Wyoming and had the thrill of seeing the power and listening to the wail of the whistle of the Big boys.
Nothing would give me goose bumps than to hear and see one restored.
