I was looking at the Union Pacific website today, and it appears that steam has finally rolled into the social network age. Things certainly have changed in 60 years!
For the next month, railfans can vote on where one of the two famous steam engines go next. Whatever route gets the most votes gets the steam engine. I personally am rooting for my home town of West Chicago, IL.
Great idea…although fat chance either engine will ever come to Toronto. I wish more railroads would do this though…it is a great way to reconnect with the past and to maintain public interest.
I’d like to have the 844 as my outbound engine some evening on #341, but I doubt the North Line bridges would support her. The HEP for the bilevels might be somewhat problematic, also. Just something other than the usual F40PH-2 would be a break in the routine. Wonder what kind of time I’d make?
Of course we’d never see these things in New Zealand!!! Our mainline railways are all 3.6" gauge.
However – we did see the British Flying Scotsman here … if you were quick enough to know where to look. It had a stopover at the port of Dunedin on its way to a tour of Australia …
So I guess it can go wherever, but we’ll never see it.
I would like to see UP steam in Butte, America. Have seen pictures of UP Challengers sitting at Rocker back in the 1950’s. Another photo opportunity would be great. From Mt. Brownelect
It can’t happen, but I’d love to see either UP steam locomotive visit us here in Richmond VA. Hey, I’d even have a box of cigars waiting for Steve Lee, assuming he still indulges!
