nice pictures!!! I havent been to IRM in years I need to try and get up there one of these days on my day off [:I]

This is a phenomenal museum, and great photos, now I know where all the old steam locomotive are stored, any hope of restoration, just how many steam locos are there???

All that old locomotives need money and hard work. I f you want to see the old stuff run again become a member and you will be helping to hold on to our railroad past. The people at Union do such a great job. I am a member and go when I can. You will feel great for going. I went in June and rode a few trains but the best was in the cupola of the Burlington Route caboose. You don’t have to live nearby to become a member.

I always wandered what happened to the BN exec units…Now I know !

Looks like you had a great time at my favorite museum.

It’s a great place and I just love the people there.

…What a variety…! Great seeing it thru your photos. Looks like it would take days to really look at the many collections.

What a great museum, a lot of great “stuff” Now if someone can tell me where it is???

It is called the Illinois Railway Museum and is located in little Union, IL which is about fifty or so miles from downtown Chicago… (go to Union and you can’t miss it…follow the signs, of which there are plenty). Their web site address is www.irm.org

Enjoy your visit!

To elaborate on what Jim said, take Interstate 90 west from Chicago to get to Union (you’ll get plenty of warning).

And to elaborate on what Mike shot, there’s also a 1957 GTW RS-1 there (one of my favorite individual locomotives), as well as a former North Shore Electroliner and a GG1. One of the neatest coincidences is that SP 1518 is a former EMD demonstrator unit and (IIRC) the first SD7 built–the IRM also has restored CNW GP7 1518, and it, too, was a demonstrator and was definitely the first GP7 ever built (the restoration included not only repainting, but restoring the high short hood to a unit that CNW had chop-nosed).
