Sorry, the stuff they are shipping is not “a semi-solid goop of sand, clay, and petroleum with the look and consistency of road asphalt” but more like a thicker version of Bunker C. Nobody is going to waste money shipping “sand and clay” to a refinery. Yes, the stuff as it is mined on the surface, which is only one of several ways of getting to the oil, is a mixture like that, but the solids never make it past the upgrader.
