Unpowered loco

Hello Folks,

I can’t seem to find any manufacturer that makes unpowered RS1 or RS3 locomotives. Anybody know of any?

I’d even settle for one or two used one’s without a motor or drive trains.

Bob

Might check out eBay for a used Atlas or Kato that you could de-motorize. Nice models, and it’d be a shame to see one be un-powered.

P.S. Welcome to the forum, this is a great place to learn what you need to know, share what you know already, and make a lot of friends, even if you’ve never met any of them.

If you know of a hobby shop that has a large inventory of old Athearn Blue Box locomotives I’d check there because Athearn was the last manufacturer to make dummy locomotives (as far as I know). As tranwreck said ebay is also a good place to check.

The problem is Athearn never did make RS-1 or RS-3 models. The only RS-3 dummy models I recall were the AHM toy-like ones of many years ago.

Bob;

If you are in HO; Atlas has the only model an Alco RS1 - never offered unpowered - except for brass.

For the RS3, there is Atlas, MDC-Roundhouse (now Athearn) and Stewart (now Bowser), Hobbytown of Boston (now Bear Locomotive) and brass.

Greetings Railroaders,

I bought two [2] HO modelpower RS-3’s at Hobby Lobby this past year for $19.00 each.
I have one working and one dummy. I remover the moter ane drive train from one and the work great. I thind they were KATY loco’s, but I kitbashed and renumbered.
By the way, If you are close to a Hobby Lobby you can go on the internet and print 40% discount vouchers most any week. And their prices is cheeper than Walthers.
Happy Railroading,

Thanks guys. I have four Atlas/Kato RS units all of which are at least 20 years old. All are still running great so I’m not going to “de-motorize” them. I have searched everywhere, including ebay, and can’t find any cheap one’s. BTW, Athearn never made a dummy RS and AHM is, well AHM! I want to make a couple dummy units that match mine to hold a DCC sound decoder and speaker. I love that Alco rumble. Guess I’ll just keep looking.

FYI: The AHM/Model Power model made by Mehano is a RS-2, not an RS-3.

Check out e-bay. Except for the Hobbytown model, there are no un-powered versions.
