I’m still trying to decide whether or not I will spend much time in here anymore. It is too hard to find things in this moronic new format and I can’t follow threads, like weekend photo fun, without posting to it.
Instead of just evolving and improving the forum they totally redesign it every two years or so and release it with no instructions or explanations leaving us to just try to figure out to where everything has been moved.
I think that is the worst part of this re-design - - - no instructions or explantions.
Just drop it on us with the attitude of, figure it out for yourselves.
Why fix what ain’t broken?
Is this a case of IT controlling our host, or did our host ask for this change to occur? I am grateful that Kalmbach hosts this site, but I fear that it is alienating a lot of members.
I had initially thought I could adapt to this new format and that it would all be fine in a day or two. However, I am already spending much less time on line in general, and less here. Too bad…
Just like the magazine there is very little articles and information pages like there used to be. I am into Dcc also and I do some scratch building, but there is more info elsewhere and better answers. They must have better things to do than to make the magazine more interesting when you can almost go thru it in 10 - 15 minutes. I have all my old magazines [about 30 years worth] and they are twice as thick as the new ones and a whole lot more info and pics to show what they did to model their layout or what they built to add to it. What are they going to do when all the hobby shops go digital and they have no more sponsers to buy ads in the magazine? I no longer buy it because of this. Most modelers look to the internet which is faster and cheaper because of the gas it takes to go to the hobby shop. My nearest hobby shop is about 35 miles away so I get what I need when I get there because I called ahead to order it and if not they call and tell me so I don’t make that 2nd trip. I would like to see them go back to the old way and show how they made or built it then in a finished picture and try to figure it out myself. I guess those days are gone and forgotten. This is just my opinion, I"m just tired of seeing the same old ads and prices that are almost out of reach for most of todays modelers which includes our younger generation that may or may not carry on the traditions we followed. Jim.
I check the users on line box every now and then, and with this new upgrade I see fewer on line users. I guess a lot of users are dropping off. I hope its just until everyone gets used to the new system .
Wow, several guys are talking about dropping off the forums. Hope that it does not come down to that. The new format is tough to accept and tough to master, but any forum member leaving would make this forum less informative, less enjoyable. Hang in there, guys.
Meanwhile, I am still wondering if there is some way to see all of the Unread messages in a single group without having to look on each forum.
I thought you had this? It is under your Manage Profile on the right. Called Your discussions. Is shows all threads you have posted on regardless of which forum they are in.
It is highly unlikely that any IT guys thought “Where can we move this?” This forum software is not being written by IT folks at Kalmbach, it has almost certainly been purchased off the shelf. It is not an evolution of the old forum, but a complete replacement. We can but speculate the need, but I suspect that the old forum software was quite obsolete, time consuming to manage and perhaps no-longer supported by the original manufacturer, whom ever that might have been. This new forum software has most of the features of the old, but is not identical. It has some features that the old did not. Its like buying a new car, guess what the fuel cap opener is not in the same place, you just get used to the new position and carry on with life. If you look hard enough I am sure that there are a host of minuscule differences in how this works compared to the other? But who cares, is it really all that important?
Nah, you’re not an idiot, and yes I meant messages Unread by me. They used to be grouped and I liked that because I could see messages that I had not yet read on other forums such as Classic Trains and Classic Toy Trains. Now, I have to check Unread messages on each forum. Not the end of the world, but it sure was easier the old way. Now, I am sure that I will overlook a lot of interesting stuff.
http://cs.trains.com/ - top of page has a section called “recent activity” - which lists new posts (which you may or may not have read) across the forums. You can click on “more” at the bottom of the section to see more. Not totally what you want, but a step in the right direction.
