unusual engine consists

On the Katy in about 1977, 2 X GP40’s, GP38, U23B, SW-7, VO1000M (EMD Reengined Baldwin). The lashup pulled to the west end of Ray Yard in Denison, Texas, uncoupled from their train then the head end crew got in the cab of the Baldwin and ran the consist down the lead track into the engine facility.

It was wierd watching all that equipment being run from the cab of that little Baldwin.

Gabe , you may well have seen a “live” SW 1200 . In fact the SW would not contribute to the work at higher speeds. It was wasting fuel if it was “working”
I would much rather isolate a small engine like this and reduce the chances of flashing over the little main generator.

While it may not be technically a consist since engines involved will often be dead in tow you can see unsual groups on both CSX and NS in the Pittsburgh area.

CSX frequently has huge numbers of mixed types going both east and west as engines are cycled in and out of the Cumberland shops to other parts of the railroad. They also have an abundance of foreign power on the line.

NS is less frequent but they too ferry engines between Conway ¶ and the Altoona shops. I recall seeing one shop train which consited of over 20 locomotives and nothing else.
