A few months ago UP parked an unusual MOW car on the siding in my small town for a couple of days. I though it was quite interesting, but i didn’t get a chance to photograph it or take any real measurements before it was pulled away. I was wondering if someone could tell me if there was aspecific name for this thing and if it had any specific use beyond the obvious. It was what I would call and articulated gondola. It was at least 150’ long–probably longer–with a single open bed and shout sides and it was articulated every 30’ or so (I’m guessing on these lengths) on a single truck with sliding joints in the sides to accomodate the pivot around curves. I assume this car is used to haul dirt and large rock for repair and maintenance of right away, but please tell me more if you can.
yep…thats what it sounds like to me… i worked one as the engineer one time…was kinda cool… the equipment opporater would dig along side the train…fill the car up in front of him…and then move the digger backwards in the car…and start filling it up agin… once iits full…we unloaded it in a few areas that needed filled in…same as loadling…but in reverse…
