UP 6900 being moved April 2 or May 2???????

What day are they moving UP 6900 DD40AX to the park in Omaha April 2 or May 2 thanks.

Do you know where that park in Omaha is located[?] I will be in Omaha 2nd week May & would really want to see it & the Big Boy? Thanks for any help you give me. [:p][:)][:o)][:D]

It sounds like April 2. I understand it’s already been moved across the mains and is surrounded by guards and chain link fence east of the downtown Amtrak station.

Just south of the Lauritzen Gardens overlooking I-80, the Missouri River valley, and BNSF’s Gibson Yard. But the engines and tender might yet have to be placed at the permanent display location. In fact, the last time I say the Big Boy #4023 about three days ago it was still on the trailer that moved it.

To get to Lauritzen Gardens, take I-80 to the 13th Street exit, then north about 1/4 mile to Bancroft Street, turn right and go about 1/2 mile to enter the parking lot. The crew and equipment will be to the right.

Thank U for the prompt reply. I will be in Omaha almost mid May so hopefully by then they have all organized. From what has been posted the DDX will be on permanent display & is not on tour. Is that correct because somebody posted that it was really on tour not staying 4ever in Omaha[?]

A couple of weeks ago on railpictures.net there were a couple of pics of 6900 coupled to 6936 pulling some of U.P.'s passenger cars for a exec. trip from Omaha to Kansas City then back. From looking at the pics 6900 had just been repainted at the Council Bluffs paint shop.

The info available to me is that the 6900 was repainted to be part of a permanent static display…“permanent”, that is, until moved to another display site sometime in the future. It will be disruptive and expensive to re-move it from this resting place.

Besides, the reason it was paired up with the 6936 is that the 6900 no longer runs. Its prime movers, if not totally removed, are certainly shot from years of disuse.

Thanks I printed the info you sent. I eagerly look forward to eyeballing it & taking a dig pix or 2 of it & big boy! As I said the reason I asked if it was staying in Omaha was someone posted that it was just going to be in & out of Omaha going to another city! [:o)][8D][:D]

Just a little side note regarding the move of 4023 and 6900. A film crew documented the move of 4023 in detail, and reportedly will be doing the same for 6900. It will be used in a future installment of the ‘Major Movers’ series shown on the Learning Channel and the History Channel. No word on when it might be shown.

5 out

Thank you for that info. I get History’s advance schedule in my in box so when I see it I wil give a heads up. [:p][:D]

Some one on other forum said that a street that they will use needs to be fixed first before they move 6900 they said the move of 4023 caused the road to be damaged and city has to fix it first. He heard this from some other guy so not sure if true. Dam them heavy BIGBOYS. Not sure if they will move it on the 9th either.

I’ll try looking up the Omaha newspaper site & see if we can Email them & get more info[:D]

OK I went to the Omaha World-Herald site & they have no Email address listed. They said if you want to contact them call (402) 444-1000. Maybe somebody who is Omaha can contact them & develop some more info. [:o)][:I]

This seems to be true. Omaha has barricaded the center of Pacific Street just at the east crosswalk, right where the Big Boy would have been turning a few weeks ago. Also, the trailers still seemed to be under the 4023 and its tender, so maybe there are some problems placing the locomotive. We’ll just have to watch and wait for a trailer and the underlying trucks to be moved from Lauritzen Gardens to the Schneider staging yard.

No matter when the 6900 will be moved, it will have to be on the weekend.

(Pretty strange sight…the 6900 up on “blocks” with its trucks underneath.)

Anyone have new info. on the move happening this weekend April 9th.

No maybe sombody in Omaha can call the phone number I posted & see if they can furnish some info. [:p][:D]
