UP #844 is back under Steam

Greetings,

I happened to see this item at the Union Pacific Historical Society webpage. UP #844 on Wednesday November 10, 2004 ran under steam in the yard in Cheyenne, WY. This is the first time that UP #844 has been fired up and under steam since Railfair 1999 . The locomotive has undergone extensive overhaul. So maybe the big Northern will come and run around on the mainline next summer.

The UP Historical Society is at www.uphs.org

There are some pictures of the #844 running in the yard. I hope there are plans to paint the boiler.

That is great too see again!! I saw her in the shop all torn apart and it nearly broke my heart too see her like that. But then again the Challenger was right next to her so it pretty much cancelled out. I cant wait to see her pulling a train out on the mainline again!!

That’s really great to hear. Now maybe they’ll paint it back in 2-tone grey???

Any loco back in steam is great too see – wish we could get a look at it up in Canada – well done to the UP guys for their work .

It sure would use a good coat of paint.

Nothing beats live steam!

I prefer black it looks better with the armour yellow coaches
Now if theyhad the two tone grey coaches then sure paint the loco two tone grey.

I am planning on taking a trip to whereever to see it
its been at least 23 years for me

[:p]

Yes!
Long live #844, may she live forever!!!

Also

A BIG thank you to Trains magazine for the SP&S 700 preservation award. Replacement of the pilot wheels may allow this 4-8-4 to do an extensive tour, maybe we’ll even see it double-headed with 844?

It is good to hear that the 844 is back in operation.I hope it comes to my neck of the woods[:)].

A big THANK YOU AND JOB WELL DONE to Steve Lee and crew for getting the 844 back in operation. I’ll be waiting with camera in hand when it comes my way.

Take care,

Russell

It’s a good day when the UP has water boiling.
I took the family on a two hour drive to see the 3985 in Marysville Ks. sitting on the Bestwall spur, funny thing there were two or three other who had travled just as far as I did to see
the monster. Steam Engines what a wounderful thing.

I seem to remember reading somewhere the UP does not allow non-UP steam engines on its rails?
