UP AC4400CW

I was at my LHS the other day and saw a UP AC4400CW painted gray instead of the usual armour yellow. Why was is painted gray? Here are two pictures of the prototype: http://www.locophotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=50134

The first one is when is was a SP patch unit.

Was this an experimental paint scheme?

I have yet to read a reason for the 6344’s unique livery, but it may have been an experiment to test a more cost effective (i.e. cheaper!) paint scheme. UP has done this before. D&H did a U23B in a similar manner many years ago, as well.

Hello,

Nice sheme anyway and maybe less dirty[oX)]

Athearn did one Engine, i quickly bought two[oX)]

Cheers,

Howdy,

Well the SP patch unit was done when the unit came in for light shopping. The UP consolidated units as they came in for work. There are quite a few SP and CNW engines running around with UP patches.

The SP repaint was probably shopped for heavy work. When units went in for heavy rebuilds they were suppossed to be painted into UP colors my best guess is that the one you have pictured was out of repairs and needed before it could be repainted.
