UP closing Burnham shops near Denver
No surprise here except that it’s taken so long. The land Burnham Shops sit on is a gold mine of redevelopment, provided UP can remediate 100 years of coal, oil, asbestos and diesel fuel in the ground.
Or find a buyer willing to accept the property “as is” (highly discounted, of course) and do the remediation themselves
Wow…all those silver linings some can find in men losing their jobs.
@Jim Norton…did you even bother to read the article…all of the men can choose to keep their jobs at another location…it only requires moving, which is a lot better than the coal miners and railroaders in mothballed coal corridors get. In my book, being able to keep your job(even if in a new location) is a silver lining…at least they aren’t unemployed.
If UP gives them a decent severance package the employees may be able to hire on with the regional transportation district in similar capacities.
Another casualty in the “war on coal.”
I took a look on Google Maps, and next door is a Light Rail Maintenance Facility. Maybe they’ll take some of it, since they’re in the midst of a massive expansion. Also, it looks like there’s a lot of industry in the immediate vicinity. It is just south of downtown so I’m sure the land is desirable but I have a feeling redevelopment will be slow.
Hey Andrew, all that “industry” you see on Google was just that, not anymore it’s mostly pot grow warehouses. We’ll probably end up with more “projects” and Mj. grow houses. Oh joy.
