UP CNW Heritage Unit thread

Somebody needs to illustrate some variations we can vote upon before it is offically announced.

Examples:

Full Passenger

Half Passenger-Half Freight

Half Early Freight-Half Late Freight.

Andrew N.F.

i dont see it fit to be a passenger scheme. UP bought them out when they were freight. i vote half passenger half late freight. use a heaping supply of zito. not that TY crap

im thinkin a mix of 50’s streamline with a modern twist… kinda like the MP/UP1983
everyone thought the MKT/UP 1988 was gona be green and yellow…
and everyone pretty much figured out wat UP/SP 1996 is gona look like with the Kick A$$ black widow paint
wish BNSF came out with some ATSF SLSF NP GN CB&Q be pretty kool

i’m sure UP will surprise us. i’m sure ex CNW workers may have some say in the design. now who wants to take me to chicago to see him get unveiled?

I plan on goin’. I hope that it has some freight homage. Honestly…it’ll say CNW on it so it’s good in my book. As long as it isn’t pink that is lol.

Quote by Techguy57:

My first guess would be the Cal Ave (Metra Coach Yard) switcher that moves cars between Cal Ave and OTC. The yard job used to venture all the way out to W Chicago to pickup bad-order Metra cars so Proviso is not that far out of the way.

Also, on a early post I alluded to a variation of green and yellow being the only paint scheme that CNW used. Don’t forget that some of the early CNW diesel freight units were painted black and yellow.

1960s green dip job scheme, anyone?

For four releases of the Heritage Units, UP sent an engine from Proviso up to Butler to retrieve the engines and bring them south. They carried a special train symbol (SBUCB) and ran without other cars or engines. However, for the 1988 (Katy) it was simply tacked onto southbound train MSSPR and brought to Proviso.

All of the schemes were designed last year by special teams; not sure if any CNW people were involved.

Ack… the nose bell is pure-CNW (though DT&I had some as well), but the amber strobe was almost universal. So I vote no on the strobe!

No, Rio Grande never had any mountain skylines on their engines, that was part of their logo. Just like the Mopac eagle and the WP feather, and probably something from the Katy that I can’t think of right now. If there’s anything “different” on the CNW unit it will be the ball-and-bar logo. I just hope there’s no Zito on it, I never thought it looked good and it looked worse after a short time out on the road… Then again, I think UP could do a very tasteful job of incorporating it in a minor role in the paint scheme!

I agree, I would love to see a bell on the nose of a new locomotive these days. But of course it could only be on the CNW painted loco, otherwise we have the whole bell on the nose going on again! But I gotta say…LOVE DA BELL!

I’d love to see both of those things happen!

[:D]Mike

I sent the email today asking if they’d be having a bell on the nose. If I hear anything back I’ll post it here. Start prayin’ and crossin’ your fingers!

and 2 air tanks on the rooof !!!

GP35s and GP/SD9s don´t cut it to be a CNW spotting feature IMHO

I’m hoping they bring back the nose pinstriping that was on the commuter F-units in the 1950s.

So far all of the heritages I’ve seen have been very geometrical in their design, I’d like to see something a bit more retro and a bit more organic on the CNW, but that’s just my two cents.

Cheers!

Beautiful! Can you do a smaller one w/white background?

CHICAGO AND NORTH WESTERN could be spelled out in a contrasting color on the long hood.

Andrew

I’ll bet it’ll look something like this:

  1. It will most definantly have the ball and bar on it, most likely in it’s usual spot on the cab.

  2. It will either have the safety stripes on the nose (like the early paint scheme) or the “Chrysler” type logo, used on the F and E units in passenger service (and the executive Fs).

  3. There will most likely be an incorporation of the lightning stripe somewhere on the engine.

  4. I’ll toss my hat in for it saying “Route Of The 400” on the longhood.

But who knows, UP could suprise us all and paint it BN cascade green and black with white stripes and a ball and bar on the cab like their ex BN SD45s!!![:p] JK

Alright, picture this. The grey from the DRGW herritage unit on the cab/nose. A yellow body with the traditional green on the top. The traditional CNW symbol, and under that it will say U.P. Then the number on the body. And if they want to make it really fance, they will add a blue wave down the body.
OR!, the UP will supperise us and show off the two remaining Dash 9’s. [:D]
