You know how UP is hated for taking over all the railroads? Well isnt it true that DRGW TOOK OVER UP but then renamed DRGW ~UP?
WHAT?! [%-)][%-)] Do you have an article or something that you got this from? I know I’ve heard about the DRGW and SP taking each other over for a while until UP took care of that issue, but nothing like this…
SPSF was forced to sell one of the railroads (SF or SP) when the ICC nixed the merger. The DRGW (Phillip Anshutz) bought the SP from the SPSF corp in 1988 and kept Southern Pacific as the name as SP was much bigger then the DRGW. So DRGW became SP also.
When the SP-UP merger happened in 1996 for tax reasons (that are beyond me) the UP was merged into the SP and then the name was changed from SP to UP. Yes, for an hour or so the UP did not exist.
if you want to go back even farther, SP was first bought out by it’s little cousin, the CP (that;s Central Pacific for those northerners), but due to SP being bigger, they kept the SP name.
So if you think about it, the UP is really the CP and the Union is complete. And for those that don’t know it, the CP and the UP were the two that connected the country. Another tidbit is that all three, the UP, CP and SP were all originally owned by the same man, along with a 4th that escapes me right now (but i belive it was rolled into the merger too).
So really all the little brothers finally came home to play nice together.
I MEANT SP!! Im sooo sorry. I knew it was one of them.
Interasting that UP didn’t exist for an Hour at one time…
Actually you were never wrong with the exception that at the time it happened ( the purchase of the UP) the DRGW (which bought the SP) was for business purposes called the SP. So the DRGW did buy the UP but under an assumed name.[:D]
