UP empty stack cars

Watching the Rochelle Web Cam this AM.a westbound train with the longest string of empty stack cars,[in fact longest train i have ever seen].Is it possible they were going to the assembly unit at Rochelle.Am sure the train would be too long for a long trip.Reaad in one of the threads where it is cheaper to scrap those emptys containers than to send them back to the far east empty.Sure see enough of those used for storage around the country.Just an old man who would like some answers.thank you in advance and enjoy reading this section.Really have learned a lot

Baretable moves are more common than you think. Repositioning equipment to balance out inbound and outbound traffic swings is an ongoing process, especially between now and Christmas. Containers (sea cans) and chassis that hop off at one intermodal facility are very likely to wind up at some other TOFC/COFC ramp the next time the railroads see them. Raton Pass sees several moves a week during this time of year during peak season.

We some-what joking refer to those massive bare-table moves as storage in motion. There’s no room at the ramp…let’s send them somewhere, anywhere.

I work at gobal 3 in rochelle and we get repo trains out of chicago a couple of times a week whenever we run low of cars. I think you souldn’ t belive everything someone writes in here. We send containers out to the ports loaded and empty. Some steamship lines don’t have enough inbound loads and have to send emptys to us for the outbound loads.

how many lifts a day now at global III?

Not enough to make the UPRR happy.[;)]

The thing I don’t get is when I see an empty wells go east and an empty wells go west on the same day!?!?!?!?!

I see them all the time. Just two or three SD70M’s can haul an empty TOFC/COFC up to two or three miles long. And that’s no joke.

Chicagorails i don’t know the numbers but i know it’s doubled since last year. they said something like running at 15% capcity last year and the place is build they say to handle 7 or 8 hundred thoushand lifts a year.

When I go to California I see many trains that are made up of M/T stack cars & TOFC/COFC cars. Most are on the BNSF. I have also seen them on the UPRR but I also have seen the UPRR tacked them on the back of trains which have containers or trailers on them. I have not seen that yet with a BNSF train where there are loads up front then the M/T cars

I’m not sure if this is related at all, but on Wednesday (the 25th) I saw a very long train of empty baretables being pulled northbound through Kenosha by two SD40-2s. These cars were dropped off at Kay Siding in Racine, presumably for storage.
